Americans spend nearly 50% of their food budgets dining out. This includes everything from quick meals in fast-food joints to take-out Chinese to fancy fine dining. When you’re dining out, keep it healthy by sticking to these tips:
- You’re #1. Order firstand you’re less likely to blow your diet with an “I’ll have what she’s having” last-minute temptation.
- Don’t drink your calories. Trim unnecessary cals by sipping on ice water or seltzer spruced up with a lemon wedge or a splash of cranberry juice.
- Get a fresh start. Order a salad to start, but ditch the croutons and ask for your dressing on the side. If possible, order low-fat dressing, or try subbing in salsa.
- Break the bread habit. Even if the server brings a basket without asking, send it back.
-Go halfsies. Set aside half your portion right away and have it packaged to bring home—or split your meal with a friend.
- Protein power. Lean grilled fish or grilled skinless poultry are the healthiest options.
- Tame your sweet tooth.Desserts are okay in moderation—just limit your indulgence to “three polite bites.”
- Practice“Fit Food Fashion.”Wear something fitted and fabulous and slip a cocktail ring orother colorful accessory on your “eating hand.”
